Specialized Therapy for ADHD, Insomnia, and Emotions

FIND SOLUTIONS AND MOVE PAST OLD PATTERNS

It is said that ADHD is a disorder of turning intentions into actions: you know how you want to spend your time, you likely know how to do it but.. you just can't. Over time this leads to an increasing sense of settling for a life that we know is below what we are capable of. This is a tremendous weight to carry. Invariably, the neurological becomes the psychological.

ADHD Counselling / Coaching

ADHD is so often misunderstood or minimized as a simple inability to sit down and pay attention. In reality, the disorder touches every aspect of our lives from relationships, self-esteem, impulse control, susceptibility to addiction, and the list goes on..

Whenever there is poorly managed ADHD in our lives, there will be secondary psychological effects including depression, anxiety, poor self-image / self-confidence / self-esteem, or compulsive / addictive behaviour including harmful alcohol or pot use, pornography or shopping addiction, or uncontrollable people pleasing / deferring to others.

As such, it is essential that when treating ADHD, we not only look at strategies and best practices to get the best out of our brains, but support for these secondary psychological effects as well. The good news is that ADHD is considered the most treatable mental health disorder in psychiatry. With the right combination of strategies and supports, client's lives can look radically different.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia

Restorative sleep is the foundation of our mental and physical health. While insomnia normally co-exists with other challenges (namely anxiety), it generally makes sense to tackle insomnia first in order to see 'what's left over,' as insomnia can significantly worsen other conditions.

Although they sound similar, CBTi is very different from traditional CBT. It is now considered the first-line treatment for insomnia, above sleep medication. The protocol itself involves a variety of interventions including sleep hygiene, stimulus control, cognitive restructuring, and sleep consolidation. When added up, CBTi presents a very powerful protocol that very often leads to a consistent sleep quality that may have felt out of reach our impossible for years or even decades.

Anxiety / Self-Esteem Counselling

Unfortunately, challenges with anxiety, self-esteem, and hopelessness have become overwhelmingly common. While everyone's experience is unique, many report a lack of fulfillment in their daily lives and a missing sense of community, closeness with others, and meaningful activities. I operate from the assumption that under normal circumstances, we will naturally pursue self-betterment in our personal, interpersonal, recreational, and professional lives. The job of therapy then, is not to simply push clients to pursue these goals, but to consider what barriers are in place preventing this from already occurring.

For those who like to tackle these barriers proactively, CBT and ACT can function as very powerful tools. Others prefer to use therapy as a space to explore ideas, gain a better sense of self, and look for an organic shift in behaviour and mindset that comes from increased self-awareness and clarity.

  • No! While I have specialized in these particular niches, I feel very confident working with clients presenting a wide variety of concerns. I should also note that while ADHD and insomnia require a specific set of tools, the psychological experience of these conditions are not in any way unique to them; there is significant overlap between the lives of neuro-typical and neuro-atypical populations.
